Shutter speed stands for the length of time a camera shutter is open to expose light into the camera sensor. If the shutter speed is fast, it can help to freeze action completely. If the shutter speed is slow, it can create an effect called motion blur, where moving objects appear blurred along the direction of the motion.

Shutter speed can also affect the exposure of the picture. The longer the shutter speed, the more light the camera is taking in. The shorter the shutter speed, the less light the camera can take in. To balance the exposure given the motion effect you want to capture, you may have to adjust the other settings to get proper lighting.
