Description
1. What was
your first impression when viewing the photo?
I’m scared for the man that is about to hit the floor, but the
capturing of the photo at the right time also impresses me.
2. What does
the work look like to you?
It looks like a random moment, but also a sense of time standing
still.
3. What is
the subject of the photo?
The subject is a man falling off of his bicycle.
4. What
textures, colors, and shapes are there?
The colors are black and white, but the textures that come to
mind are associated with winter because the man is bundled up, and there seems
to be snow, which is grainy, wet and cold. The image also seems a bit grainy
and not completely clear.
5. What about
line, forms and space?
The subject is a little off center, but he and the bicycle make
a square in the middle of the image. The street lines also bring the eye
directly toward the subject.
Analysis:
1.What stands out and draws your eye in this photo?
The man falling off the bicycle is what draws the eye to the
photograph.
2
How is the
photograph organized in terms of design elements? (line, space, etc)
The photo is organized well because it has the lines directing
the eyes to the subject, and the fact that it is in black and white adds an
extra level of dramatization.
3
What about
contrast, rhythm, balance, proportion?
The black and white coloring show contrast but also draw
attention to the subject, and balance the image out. There is a balance between
dark and light and near and far. The subject stands out with the help of these
balances too.
Interpretation
1
What is the
photo about?
The photo is about a man falling off of a bicycle, but it is
shot before he hits the ground, so it could be about the calm before the storm,
or the shock the man is facing.
2
What is the
message of the photographer?
The photographer might be trying to convey the beauty of all
situations at certain stages, even things that hurt us. He could also be trying
to convey a certain power that humans don’t hold, and that we don’t always have
control over situations.
3
Does the
photo have a purpose?
I think the photo can have a purpose depending on how people see
it.
4
What feelings
do you get from the photo?
It makes me nervous because I know the feeling of falling off of
a bike, and seeing the image, that is all I can think about.
5
Does it
remind you of something?
It reminds me of learning to ride a bike when I was a child and
the many times I fell, but in relation to other images, it doesn’t remind me of
anything.
Evaluation
1
Did your
first impression change, and why?
No, I still think the image is cool, but it still gives me that
first impact of “Oh my gosh that’s going to hurt!” when I see it.
2
Do you think
it is a successful photo?
Yes.
3
Is it unique?
Yes, it is very unique. It is hard to take pictures of falling
objects, especially when it is a person on a bike. (Unless it is done on
purpose, but who would do that?)
4 Could you do it better?
Probably not!
5 Can you readily understand the subject matter, and do the
design elements (space, form, line, shape, color, texture) help you to do so?
Yes, the design elements point straight to the subject, and make
it very clear to look at.
6 Was the photo well planned, in your opinion?
I think it could have been planned, or it could have just been
perfect timing.
7 Would you buy it or hang it in your home?
It is a good photo, but it would probably give me anxiety if I
had it in my house.
8 Have you learned anything that you could apply to your own
photography?
I like the angles the photographer used, and the black and white
contrast with the grey, and how he made it enhance the subject even more.
9 Does the photo inspire you?
To take photos, yes. To ride
a bike, not so much…
