Olivia - test 2

Description
1. What was your first impression when viewing the photo?
My impression was that I was looking, almost being welcomed, into a person's dream landscape.
2. What does the work look like to you?
It looks like a merry-go-round that has been abandoned for the winter snows.
3. What is the subject of the photo?
The empty merry-go-round in the far ground.
4. What textures, colors, and shapes are there?
There's the contrast of colors between the cold white snow and warm red and golds of the merry-go-round. The whole photo is a bit out of focus, which gives it a fuzzy, smooth texture. The shading in the corners of the photo give the square picture a rounder shape, which is also found in the merry-go-round.
5. What about line, forms and space?
The snow and open sky leave a large blank space adding to the abandoned feel. All of the lines in the photo point to the merry-go-round. The rails especially point directly at the merry-go-round.
Analysis:
  1. What stands out and draws your eye in this photo
The lines of the rails and the shading in the corners of the picture draw my in to the merry-go-round. They create the illusion that I'm almost being pulled into the photograph towards the merry-go-round.
  1. How is the photograph organized in terms of design elements (line, space, etc)
The merry-go-round is set off towards the left, but the rails are centered and angled toward the merry-go-round making it the subject of the photo.
  1. What about contrast, rhythm, balance, proportion?
The bright colors of the merry-go-round are contrasted against the colder winter colors. The merry-go-round also has curves and details, which is contrasted against the straight lines and simplicity of its surroundings.

Interpretation
  1. What is the photo about
This photo is about a happy childhood memory (riding the merry-go-round) from a different point of view, that being the cold of winter and shut down.
  1. What is the message of the photographer?
To contrast the feelings of warmth that come from the happy childhood memories of riding the merry-go-round with a lonely feeling of seeing the merry-go-round abandoned for the winter.
  1. Does the photo have a purpose?
To draw you into a sort of dream landscape to show you how it looks when your childhood is left abandoned.
  1. What feelings do you get from the photo?
Enchantment with a sense of loneliness and the fear of growing up.
  1. Does it remind you of something?
Nothing in particular.
There's a merry-go-round like this in Florence, which I remember as a bright and cherry place, which is an interesting contrast to this merry-go-round.
Evaluation
  1. Did your first impression change, and why?
A little, my feelings changed to be a little more sad than they were at first.
  1. Do you think it is a successful photo?
Yes I do.
  1. Is it unique?
Yes, it's not bright and cherry as merry-go-rounds usually are.
  1. Could you do it better?
I would probably have left the merry-go-round in just a little more focus.
  1. Can you readily understand the subject matter, and do the design elements (space, form, line, shape, color, texture) help you to do so?
Yes they do, they all point towards the subject.
  1. Was the photo well planned, in your opinion?
In my opinion I think it is very well planned.
  1. Would you buy it or hang it in your home?
Yes I would
  1. Have you learned anything that you could apply to your own photography?
Blurry photos are not always a bad thing
  1. Does the photo inspire you?
I'm inspired to pay more attention to lines in my own photography.
