Emma - Test 2

Description
1. What was your first impression when viewing the photo?
My first impression was that the two in the photo were a couple and somehow trying to intimidate the viewer.

2. What does the work look like to you?
 It looks like a portrait.

3. What is the subject of the photo?
The subject of the photo is the couple in the middle.

4. What textures, colors, and shapes are there?
There are no colors but there is a lot of texture in the background, their clothes, and their faces.

5. What about line, forms and space?
There are the lines of the road and the roofs of the houses that lead the viewer into the picture but the only major forms are really the two people, which take up the majority of space in the photo.

Analysis:
1.  What stands out and draws your eye in this photo?
The expressions on their faces stand out the most to me.

2.  How is the photograph organized in terms of design elements (line, space, etc)
The people take up the largest part of the photo, with their faces right in the middle, their bodies taking up the lower third, and the background occupying the top third.

3.  What about contrast, rhythm, balance, proportion?
The photo has high contrast, especially on the people themselves. Their clothes are very dark, as well as his hair and her hat, and their faces are the lightest parts of the photo, drawing attention to them. The photo is very symmetrical with one face on either side and the houses in the background. The proportions of the houses to the people make the viewer feel like they are very close to the man and the woman.

Interpretation
1.  What is the photo about?
The photo is about the relationship between the two people and possibly their relationship to the viewer.

2.  What is the message of the photographer?
The message is about the intimacy between these two people.

3.  Does the photo have a purpose?
I think the purpose is to showcase the intimacy between two people in a public setting.

4.  What feelings do you get from the photo?
I feel like I am being included but also kind of intruding. It's also a little creepy.

5.  Does it remind you of something?
It actually kind of reminds me of the Addams Family.

Evaluation
1.  Did your first impression change, and why?
It did. Originally I thought it was a confrontation and the subjects were trying to influence and manipulate the viewer, but now I see it more as a portrait of their intimacy.

2.  Do you think it is a successful photo?
I think it is a very successful photo.

3.  Is it unique?
Portraits are not unique themselves, but I think that the emotion captured in this one makes it unique.

4.  Could you do it better?
 I definitely could not.

5.  Can you readily understand the subject matter, and do the design elements (space, form, line, shape, color, texture) help you to do so?
The subject matter is readily understandable and I think that the use of space and contrast are the most useful tools in this regard.

6.  Was the photo well planned, in your opinion?
 Yes, it was.

7.  Would you buy it or hang it in your home?
I don't think I would just because it feels like such an intimate moment between the two.

8.  Have you learned anything that you could apply to your own photography?
I have learned about finding ways to capture the relationships between people.

9.  Does the photo inspire you?
It does inspire me to both take pictures like that and to be more attentive to emotion.
