James Nachtwey is an American photojournalist and war photographer. In 1980, he moved to New York and worked as a freelance photographer. In 1981, he went to Northern Ireland to cover civil strife. He has covered social issues and armed conflict in South Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, including photographing war and famine in the Soviet Union. Nachtwey has been injured during his field work, while documenting the conflict in Iraq, due to a grenade that was thrown into his vehicle. His work covers many years, specializing in war, and social justice. He was even present during 9/11, and documented the affect on the Sudan war on civilians.
